Sports Structure
Concerning the sport possibilities of people with disability a lot have been changed in the Netherlands the last twenty years. In the eighties of the former age there were two sport organizations who cared about people with special needs: the Nebas (Dutch federation for adapted sports) and the NSG (Dutch sport federation for mentally retarded people). Besides of that big sport organizations there were smaller federations for instance for people with communicative disabilities (hearing, speech). The Nebas and the NSG were more or less an umbrella for all kinds of smaller sport clubs all around the Netherlands.
In the growing process of integration several things happened:
In the first place the Nebas and the NSG fused into an new organization NebasNsg. About 750 sport clubs are joined together in that new organization, mostly clubs which are established by and for people with all kind of disabilities. More than 30 000 people with a disability or chronic disease are member and wants to do all kind of sport activities individual or as member of a team. They do their sport activities on all kind of level: for pleasure or for competition national and international (f .e. Paralympics, Special Olympics, Deaflympics).
In the second place the NebasNsg wants to be in the future a center for experience and knowledge in APA in the field of sport for people with a disability, rehabilitation, education and healthcare in stead of a sport federation. So nowadays the NebasNsg works together with the NOC*NSF (Dutch Olympic organization and sport organization) and all kind of regular Sport Federation (Soccer, Swimming, Gyms, etc.) in trying to increase integration possibilities for people with a disability. So the central mission is Integration trough Sport. Several Sports activities c.q. clubs for people with disabilities are transferred to the regular federation. For example sit volleyball is a special kind of volleyball in stead of a special sport in the NebasNsg. In about five years (2010) the NebasNsg is ‘only’ a center for experience and knowledge in APA and no longer a sport federation. Of course there will always be a special job in the field of sport and APA for the NebasNsg, but the motto is: “normaal wat normaal kan, speciaal wat speciaal moet.” (normal what can be normal, special what should be special)
