Educational Structure

The educational law in Norway ensures all pupils the right of adapted education within the regular school system since 1976. In order to implement this, several of the former special schools have been developed into resource centres, and competence centres that advice and assists teaching staff and administrators in the regional school system. Some special schools still exist, like the state school for the deaf, Skaadalen and some schools for multi-disabled, but the decision about where a pupil should receive education is the responsibility of the parents and the pupils themselves, who can ask help at the National Support System for Special Education (Statped).

Statped consists of 17 resource centres owned by the State, and 14 units for special education, owned by local authorities, county administrations, foundations or private organisations, where Statped buys services. These centres offer special educational guidance and support for local authorities and county administrations.

School sports

There are no official organized school sport in Norway . Courses and camps for youth are organized by the lokal sports federations and clubs and the Norwegian Sport Federation for the Disabled (NFI). Special initiatives to recrute new youngsters for competitions are done by sports federations (NFI), and also by some of the organistions for disabled like the Norwegian Organization of the Blind.
