Sports Structure

The Department of Culture is in charge of sport through their 'Office of Sports'. They are in charge of the official policy of sports in Norway and they are handling the lotto money for cultural and sports activities. Before they were very active in the practical work in the institutions for the disabled. Now when the institutions are closed they are mainly controlling policy and money, but still they involve sum in publishing material about how to learn disabled to go skiing or swimming and how to adapt sports accommodations to the disabled. Their official policy to day is: INCLUSION IN SPORT.

In Norway , there is one umbrella federation for sports: The Norwegian Confederation of Sport and Olympic Committee. They consist of all abled-bodied sports federations (ski, swimming etc.) and the Norwegian Sport Federation for the Disabled (NFI). This is a sports federation, which also works on the integration of sports for disabled in the able-bodied sports federations. In 1997 it was founded on a base of 3 different federations: 1) Norwegian Organisation for Disabled Sport; 2) Sport for mentally retarded committee; 3) Norwegian Deaf Association.

Since the Paralympic Committee is not integrated in the Norwegian Olympic Committee, the NFI acts as the Norwegian Paralympic Committee.

Since Special Olympics are not included in the Norwegian Olymic Committee either, the NFI also acts as the Norwegian Special Olympic Committee.
