Sports Structure

In Poland , sport for persons with disabilities is under the responsibility of the Ministry of National Education and Sport /MENiS/. The Ministry of National Education and Sport co-operates with many associations and federations in order to implement tasks related to sport and physical culture among persons with disabilities.

In Poland there are two types of sport organizations: multidisciplinary associations and monodisciplinary federations. The following is a list of the largest organizations and associations with national wide range of activity:

Polish Paralympic CommitteePolish Paralympic Committee / PKPar
Polish Paralympic Committee represents polish paralympic sport on the international arena and promote paralympic movement especially among youth in Poland . It co-orporates with other National Paralympic Committee (NPC), preparing and submitting the Polish National Paralympic Team for the Paralympic Games and gaining finances for paralympic activities.
PKPar is a member of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and of the European Paralympic Committee (EPC).

Polish Sports Association for the DisabledPolish Sports Association for the Disabled “Start” / PZSN “Start”
The Polish Sports Association for the Disabled “Start” is established to organise and develope popular physical culture, sports, active rehabilitation, tourism and recreation among persons with disabilities. The “Start” is engaged in the work with sportsmen of 2 groups of disabilities: visual and mobility impairments. The “Start” unites all organizations from these two groups. There are 171 sections in the following sports: archery, fencing, powerlifting, swimming, table tennis, track and fields, standing and sitting volleyball, shooting, alpine and corss-country skiing, goalball, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair dance and chess. The “Start” is a member of the IPC, ISOD, IBSA, CP ISPA, ISMWSF, IWBF, and WOVD.

Polish Social Sport Association „Succeeding Together” / PTSS „Sprawni Razem”
PTSS is a mass-organization with a sport character which acts on behalf of more than 80 thousands children and youth with mild mental retardation and their families. It comprises of clubs in 446 primary schools and 229 special technical schools. PTSS provides sports sections in soccer, handball, basketball, track and field, table tennis, skiing, swimming, cross-country running. PTSS “ Succeeding Together ” is a member of the INAS-FID.

Foundation for Active Rehabilitation Foundation for Active Rehabilitation / FAR
The main target of FAR is to promote Movement of Active Rehabilitation among people with spinal cord injury (SCI). The Movement of Active Rehabilitation is to help people with SCI to become independent in all spheres of their life (ADL, work, education, family etc.). The way to get the aim is a physical activity. The FAR is organizing sports camps and provides trainings of wheelchair maneuverability, conditioning, archery, table tennis, swimming and wheelchair rugby.

 

Polish Wheelchair Tennis FederationPolish Wheelchair Tennis Federation / PZTnW
PZTnW comprises of 10 sport clubs (about 100 wheelchair tennis players). It organizes: competitions (national and international tournaments), sport camps, trenings and coach courses. PZTnW ia a member of International Tennis Federation (ITF).


Polish Deaf Sports AssociationPolish Deaf Sports Association / PZSG
The aim of the PZSG is to create organizational framework to the deaf and other persons with hearing impairment to assist them in sport activities. At presence PZSG comprises of 24 sport clubs (includes 6 school clubs). PZSG is active on the whole territory of Poland and has about 2 000 members.


Association of Physical Culture, Sport and Tourism of Blind and Weakseeing “Cross”
The aim of the association is to organize and develop mass physical culture, sport, rehabilitation, tourism and active rest among persons with visual impairment. The “Cross” has sport sections in chess, bicycling (tandems), bridge, canoeing, checkers, sailing, bowling, track and field, dance and skiing. It provides care and help to about 2500 members and organizes competitions, sports camps and tourist events.

Special Olympics PolandSpecial Olympics Poland
The Special Olympics Poland has about 11 thousands participants with intellectual disabilities who systematically take part in trainings and tournaments. It takes care of 350 sport sections in Poland in 16 summer sports (gymnastics, equestrian, roller-skating, track and field, cycling, soccer, softball, swimming, sailing, powerlifting, table tennis, badminton, basketball, canoeing, tennis and bowling) and 4 winter sports (alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, speed skating and floor hockey).
