Sports Structure

The Portuguese Federation of Sports for Disabled (FPDD – Federação Portuguesa de Desporto para Deficientes) was funded in 1988 in Lisbon and represents the Portuguese Olympic Comity and the International Paralympic Comity. This federation is tutored by the Ministry of Social Security and Work, by the State Secretary of Youth and Sports and the National Secretariat of Rehabilitation. This federation pretends to promote, regulate and direct the practice of different sportive modalities for persons with disabilities.

There are five National Associations of sport incorporated in FPDD:

  1. PC-AND (Cerebral Paralysis - National Sportive Association) was funded in 1960 and has presently 376 athletes. This association includes the modalities of Athletics, Boccia, Cycling, Football, Horsemanship, Swimming, Rowing, and Table Tennis.
  2. ACAPO (Association of Blinds and Amblyopics of Portugal) was funded in 1989 and has presently 53 athletes. This association includes the modalities of Athletics, Cycling, Football, Goalball, Swimming, Rowing and Chess.
  3. ANDDEM (National Sportive Association for People with Mental Handicap) was funded in 1991 and has presently 1588 athletes. This association includes the modalities of Athletics, Cycling, Basketball, Football, Horsemanship, Swimming, Rowing, Chess, Gymnastics and Table Tennis.
  4. ANDDEMOT (National Sportive Association for People with Motor Handicap) was funded in 1995 and has presently 142 athletes. This association includes the modalities of Athletics, Cycling, Wheelchair Basketball, Billiards, Fishing, Swimming, Rowing, Target Practice, and Table Tennis.
  5. LPDS (Portuguese League of Sports for Deaf) was created from ONDS(National Sports Organization for Deaf) directly connected to the international association CISS (Comité International des Sports des Sourds). This association was first created apart from FPDD unlike other sportive associations but later became incorporated in the Federation.
