Education

Educational Structure

The overall aim in Sweden is “A School for All”. This means that there are no special schools for children with special needs. Most often they attend their homeschool in the municipality.
Though, for children who are deaf or hard hearing, there are 6 special schools (Specialskolemyndigheten) in Sweden. Also for children with severe learning disabilities there is a school in each municipality. To find the adresses, go on the website and ask for "Särskolor" or "Grundsärskolor".

The Swedish National Agency for Education
The Swedish National Agency for Education is the central administrative authority for the Swedish public school system for children, young people and adults, as well as for preschool activities and child care for school children. They give you all the information you want about special education and under the link ‘school adresses’ you can find a list of schools if you select ‘special-needs school’ under ‘type of school’.

Sports in special schools

Study: 'Experiences of sports in a special school for mentally retarded children'
The subject sport in a special school for mentally retarded children should take care of the pupils natural need of motion and physical activity. The pupils can try and learn different plays, dances and branches of sports. The aim with the study was to make a map of the subject sport in a school for mentally retarded children and their experiences of the subject. The conclusions were that the children liked the subject. They were happy when they were doing sport activities and they were happy to join the lessons in school. They were even physical active in leisure hours. Another important thing is which attitude the teacher mediate to the children and how she/he treats them.

The Swedish Institute for Special Needs Education is the national authority who coordinates government support in respect of special needs education for children, young people and adults with disabilities. The Institute is a resource for people working with children, adolescents and adults with disabilities. Our task is to provide support to those responsible for special needs education in government operated schools and independent schools under central supervision. We do this by distributing information and providing knowledge about special needs education, and by initiating and participating in developmental work in this field.
Among other things they arrange one- or two-day courses and shorter lectures in adapted physical activity. These courses both theoretical an practical.
